Chapter 26

Anticipation

McKenzie awoke at ten thirty the following morning. She threw on some sweats, took the elevator down to the ground level, and began the two-block journey to Starbucks to pick up coffee and a newspaper. What was Jackson doing right now? Just the thought of him made her happy.

Back in her apartment, she opened the Hartford Courant and searched for a review of the show. She couldn’t find one. Then she went online and retrieved a review on the Courant’s website. The reviewer had liked it as well.

It had been a wonderful evening. Her lips pursed. What would it have been like to kiss Jackson? Soft and sweet? Or needy and passionate? Monica would have an opinion. She should be up by now. So, McKenzie grabbed her phone and texted her: You up yet?

The response came within seconds: Yep.

McKenzie called her and set her phone on speaker. “Hey.”

“So how’d it go last night? Inquiring minds want to know.”

She leaned on the countertop and gazed out over Downtown Hartford, smiling. “He’s so nice. It was the best date I’ve ever had.”

“Nice? Did you invite him up to your apartment?”

“Of course not. It was only a first date.” McKenzie rolled her eyes. “Besides, he’s a Baptist, so he probably isn’t into that sort of thing right away.”

“Baptist? Maybe you’d better lose him then, babe. Not your type.”

McKenzie sat on one of the barstools at the island. “Normally, he wouldn’t be. But there’s something different about him. In a way, I wish I wasn’t so attracted to him.”

“Why?”

“It was so much easier to dump him before because of his drinking, but he’s changed. He’s got all these off-the-wall ideas about God and evolution and that kind of stuff, and it bugs me. It’s against everything I ever learned in school. On the other hand, he’s so nice and respectful that I love being around him.” She sighed. “I think he’s the nicest man I’ve ever met.”

“That’s something coming from you, Miss Picky. I’m happy for you.”

“Well, let’s see what happens.”

“Has he ever been married?” Monica asked.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so, but I didn’t get around to asking Jackson about past loves yet.”

“Do you think he’s Mr. Right?”

McKenzie sniffed. “You’re unbelievable.”

“Come on. You can tell me. I’m waiting.”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“Did he say he would call you?”

“He said he’d give me a call to do something again soon.”

“Sounds promising. When do I get to meet him?”

“What’s the hurry?”

“We’ve been waiting a long time for you to meet a guy like this. I’m so excited for you.”

The Sunday morning service had just ended when Jackson spotted Mike Tolbert among the crowd in the lobby. He’d just learned that Mike’s mom had died from a heart attack a week ago. “Hey, Mike. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom.” They shook hands. “How are you doing?”

“All right. It was a shock, her passing so suddenly. I had just talked with her a few days earlier. I guess you never know when your time is up.
